Dads and Doulas
"Fathers,like mothers are not born.
Men grow into fathers and fathering
is a very important stage in their
development"- David Gottesman
This page is dedicated to the Dads who worked hard with their Doulas
and to give light to their experiences. In childbirth, all the focus is
usually on  mom, but I feel that  Dads are just as important and it is my
goal to involve them as much as they want to be . It is not the job of the
Doula to take the place of the Dad, but rather to bring him closer to the
labor and birth of his baby.
I believe that the Dad and Doula are a team and work together to comfort
the laboring mother. She needs the love and support of her partner and she
needs the physical comfort offered by the Doula. Often times, dads that are
uncertain about facing labor become a more involved partner with the help
of the Doula. He is able to participate to the level that he is comfortable and
at the same time he knows his wife is being cared for continuously if he
needs to step back for a moment. I find this knowledge often allows a Dad
to participate more fully in the birth of his child because he does not feel
that he has to shoulder all the responsibility of comfort in an experience that
is foreign to him.
